THE WEST AFRICAN SAVANNAH stretches from the Atlantic coast of Senegal to the shores of Lake Chad and separates the Sahara Desert from the equatorial forest. This land of scrub and grass plains is the home of traders, herders and nomads who roam with their cattle and camels in search of pasture. Here in this vast area of the savannah south of the Sahara in two countries known as Mali and Niger also live some of the finest silver artisans, textile makers and leather workers. Interwoven throughout this artisan and ethnic reality lies a deep vein of oral and musical traditions, instruments, singers and performers.
AFRICA NOMAD TRADES in Tuareg hand-crafted, hand-etched, co-created pure silver adornment. I have been traveling to West Africa for more than 15 years with 8 of those to live and hand-work pure silver with one particular family of Tuareg silversmiths in Agadez, Northern Niger. Much of the silver jewelry that I offer here closely follows the traditional forms and hand-etched designs of these Sahara Berber people. Other unique designs are a collaboration of this African ethnic tradition and my own sensibilities. Through the hands of an artist and the feet of a traveler, I am a woman that has been journeying for tribal freedom into the depths of my own inner soulsource.
